Buckeye Burl Side Tables - Set

What is Buckeye Burl?

It is unusual species - Aesculus Californica. Most of the interesting burl (burr in the UK), comes from the root part of this tree. Because of where and how the tree grows, it is very difficult to mill. A lot of the tree root is lost in that process, hence what makes it expensive species. But what remains is breathtaking. The colour range is also something not seen anywhere else with the broad spectrum - from almost black, blue to bright yellow. The slab was imported from California, designed and built here, in London by Pure Unique.

This is the set of two side tables - one large “Aurora” and small “Creation of Beauty”.

“Aurora” simply alludes to the colour pattern on this table top. On the deeper level, it implies security and safety. Northern lights is a reminder of how the magnetic field protect us, earthlings from the solar radiation. How it protect the life on our planet. Like any natural phenomenon, it is as pretty, as it can be destructive. The juxtaposition of the straight lines and natural, chaotic edge symbolise the balance, like in a yin-yang concept. Moreover, small crevices, cracks and natural lines were left exposed to highlight this ancient Chinese philosophical concept. The metal, wide and elegant table leg in antique brass finish could be a statement on its own but together, both top and the base make the piece of art worthy of its name. “Aurora” will look best in the luxurious interior.

“Creation of beauty” was inspired by the fresco painting “The Creation of Adam” by Michelangelo. The dark “headland” on the top almost, but not quite, touching the yellow part. It resembles the God’s and Adam’s fingers at Michelangelo’s fresco. The twisted table leg symbolises the Biblical snake. Again, this table was made with the juxtaposition in mind of perfect shapes, with imperfect texture. The based is formed from a solid brushed brass plate to add elegance and stability
